Ice & Snow Stays
Ice hotels, snow suites and igloo rooms, with the only question that really matters answered first: is it open this season. Most of them melt every spring and are rebuilt from scratch, so a page that was true last winter tells you nothing about this one.
We list places where you sleep in the ice or snow itself, or in the cold rooms of a property built around it. Many operators sell warm rooms on the same site, which is useful to know — but a heated cabin beside an ice bar is not an ice hotel, and we do not file it as one.
It is genuinely cold, and for most people it is a one-night thrill rather than a week. Expect a sleeping bag rated for the room, facilities in a heated building you walk to, and plenty of guests booking somewhere warm for their second night.
Opening dates move with the weather, and a published season is a plan rather than a promise. We date what we check and re-check on a rolling cycle, so a season that has quietly shifted gets caught instead of published.

Are these ice hotels and snow rooms real?
Admission here is by hand: we work from the operator's own site rather than from a roundup, and confirm the property exists and still takes overnight guests before it is listed. Where a stay has been checked since, its page carries the dated stamp — that date is the whole claim we make for it, and the older entries are being worked through on the same rolling cycle. A stay is never admitted because it paid to be: verification is not for sale.
Are they still open?
As of the date printed on that stay's page, where one is shown — that date, not a promise, is the honest answer. Ice hotels and snow rooms close more often than ordinary hotels: seasons shift, small operators stop, permits lapse. So we re-check the catalog on a rolling cycle and take a stay down when we can no longer confirm it, which means this page gets shorter as well as longer.

When can you actually stay in an ice hotel?
Almost every ice hotel is rebuilt from scratch each winter, so the season is short and it moves. The Nordic builds usually open around mid-December and hold through the deep cold, then close through late March and into April as the structure softens — rooms go first where the sun reaches them. A handful of operators keep a refrigerated wing running all year, which is the only honest way to sleep on ice in July, and it is a smaller, quieter thing than the winter build. Dates are set by the weather rather than the calendar, so read any published season as a plan and confirm the nights you want with the operator before you book flights.
