Hotels rebuilt out of ice and snow every winter, and taken apart again by the river they came from. We confirm each one is opening for the coming season and write down the date we checked, because an ice hotel that stood last year is not the same thing as an ice hotel you can book this one.
A room here is carved, not decorated. The bed is a block of ice under reindeer hide and a rated sleeping bag; the walls are the building. The ones we admit are the places where the structure is the reason to go, rather than a snow-themed room inside a warm building.
Two catches, both real. The season is short and it is not negotiable — these buildings exist for part of the year and melt for the rest — and the room sits around freezing all night, which is fine with the right bag and miserable without one. Most guests book a single ice night and a warm one after it.
