Castle hotels, cliff-hung capsules and lighthouse keepers' quarters you can actually book — buildings most people assume you can only visit on a tour. Every stay we admit here is opened by a person first: we find the operator, confirm the rooms still take overnight guests, and record the date we looked.
What gets in is decided by the building, not the star rating. A fortress whose walls are still the walls, a working light where the keeper's rooms are now the bedroom, a capsule bolted to a rock face — the structure has to be the reason you would go, or it is just an old hotel.
The catch in this category is almost always access. Historic buildings rarely have lifts, cliffside rooms are reached on foot up something steep and exposed, and a lighthouse is a lighthouse: stairs, wind, and a long way from the nearest shop. We would rather write that down than let the photographs imply otherwise.
Old buildings also attract loose marketing — "castle" can mean a Victorian villa with crenellations added later. We keep the ones where the history is structural and leave the rest to the roundups.

Are these castle, lighthouse and cliffside stays real?
Admission here is by hand: we work from the operator's own site rather than from a roundup, and confirm the property exists and still takes overnight guests before it is listed. Where a stay has been checked since, its page carries the dated stamp — that date is the whole claim we make for it, and the older entries are being worked through on the same rolling cycle. A stay is never admitted because it paid to be: verification is not for sale.
Are they still open?
As of the date printed on that stay's page, where one is shown — that date, not a promise, is the honest answer. Castle, lighthouse and cliffside stays close more often than ordinary hotels: seasons shift, small operators stop, permits lapse. So we re-check the catalog on a rolling cycle and take a stay down when we can no longer confirm it, which means this page gets shorter as well as longer.
