Castle hotels, cliff-hung capsules and lighthouse keepers' quarters you can actually book — buildings most people assume you can only visit on a tour. Every stay we admit here is opened by a person first: we find the operator, confirm the rooms still take overnight guests, and record the date we looked.

What gets in is decided by the building, not the star rating. A fortress whose walls are still the walls, a working light where the keeper's rooms are now the bedroom, a capsule bolted to a rock face — the structure has to be the reason you would go, or it is just an old hotel.

The catch in this category is almost always access. Historic buildings rarely have lifts, cliffside rooms are reached on foot up something steep and exposed, and a lighthouse is a lighthouse: stairs, wind, and a long way from the nearest shop. We would rather write that down than let the photographs imply otherwise.

Old buildings also attract loose marketing — "castle" can mean a Victorian villa with crenellations added later. We keep the ones where the history is structural and leave the rest to the roundups.
