Unusual & Unique Places to Stay in Finland

Finland's unusual stays are mostly a northern idea: cabins with a glass roof or a glass dome over the bed, so that the sky is the ceiling, and snow hotels built again from fresh snow and ice every winter. Most of them sit in Lapland, near or above the Arctic Circle.

The catch is that the reason to go cannot be booked. Aurora sightings need a dark, clear night, and a week of cloud is common; from late spring to late summer the nights are too light to see them at all. Snow rooms exist only in deep winter and are kept below freezing, so guests sleep in thermal bags. Lapland is a flight or an overnight train from Helsinki.
