Villas on stilts and rooms that float, where the front step goes into the water. Every one is confirmed open and taking bookings before it appears here, and dated — this genre is exposed to storms and to resort closures that get announced quietly.
What gets in is the relationship to the water, not the thread count. A villa with a ladder off the deck and the lagoon underneath belongs here; a beachfront room with a sea view is a different thing, however good it is.
The catch is cost and access, in that order. Overwater rooms are the most expensive category we cover, and the ones worth the money usually need a boat or a seaplane on top of the flight. Marine life under the deck is genuine — and so is the noise of water all night, which not everyone sleeps through.
