Cave & Underground Hotels

Rooms cut into rock — cave houses, mine levels, hillside cellars and a few places you reach by going down rather than in. Each one is opened by a person first, who confirms the rooms still take overnight guests and writes down the date.

Stone makes a very particular room. It is quiet in a way built walls never manage, it holds one temperature through the year, and the shape of the room is whatever the rock allowed rather than whatever an architect drew.

The catches are light, damp and phone signal. Many of these rooms have one small window or none, the air is cooler and wetter than you expect, and connectivity underground ranges from poor to absent. If waking up in the dark bothers you, this is not your category.
