Overwater villas and floating cabins where the floor really is above the water, each confirmed open before it goes on the page. This category carries more recycled photography than any other, so we work from the operator's own site rather than from whatever a listicle reused.

A stay qualifies when the room sits on stilts, a pontoon or a hull: water underneath, not merely a view of it. A beachfront suite with a jetty is a beach hotel, however good the photograph is.

Access is the catch. It is usually a boat, sometimes a seaplane, occasionally a long road transfer, and all of them answer to the weather. Being over water also means sun, wind and tides — and transfers that can add meaningfully to the price you thought you were paying.

The category runs much wider than the honeymoon bracket it is famous for, down to floating cabins on inland lakes and working harbours. Both ends belong here, and we would rather show the range than pretend the whole idea is out of reach.
